Smocked Dress for Winter

I always struggle with getting dressed in the winter. I want to be comfortable but warm, and I get into major clothing ruts where I find myself reaching for the same things over and over again. Right now, I’m staying home a lot because of the huge uptick in cases, but I’m hoping that in a month or two it’s a little safer for me to go out again, at least a little bit more often! Back when I was feeling a little more optimistic about going places, I decided to pick up a dress or two since I didn’t go anywhere at all last winter.

Heather, a white woman in a power wheelchair, is wearing a grey long sleeved maxi dress with a smocked top and mustard yellow suede flats. Her brown hair is loosely curled, and she's on her patio with her yard behind her.

My Nap Dress obsession (from this post) really highlights my love of smocked dresses – they just fit me super well. But since it is COLD here in the winter, and it’s hard for me to layer a shirt under my dresses (I can just never get it to lay right), I can’t wear the Nap Dresses as much as I’d like. So when I came across this smocked dress from Madewell, I was very excited.

It has all the things that I need in a dress for winter. It’s still smocked, which I obviously love. The fabric is a blend with some wool in it, so it’s lightweight to wear but warmer and more winter-appropriate. It has pockets, too, which personally means nothing to me but I bet that many of you will appreciate! On me, it’s maxi length, but I’d imagine it’d be a midi on most of you – it would definitely look cute with a pair of booties in addition to flats.

I just love how easy and comfortable the dress is is to wear, while still looking cute. I could definitely wear this to work, were I going into the office, but it’s also casual enough to wear to meet with friends, go to dinner, visit a museum – it’s just really versatile.

It’s not a groundbreaking outfit, but I just feel really good in it, and it’s making me want to be able to have somewhere to wear it again soon – fingers crossed!

Right now, this dress is an extra 40% off with the code CLASSIFIED.
