In my Accidentally Adaptive series, I share products or services that aren’t specifically designed to be adaptive but have a particular use for me as a disabled woman.
Fall is here, and so is my desire to stay warm and cozy all the time in comfy layers. But a lot of times, adding layers is better for me in theory than it is in reality. Anything too tight or too bulky is really hard for me to move around in, and it often ends up getting really bunched up around my waist, because things fit differently when you’re seated. But this Addison Bay Crewneck, with zippers on both sides, is an accidentally adaptive solution to my problems!

I found out about Addison Bay when Grace had a collection with them a while ago, and I’ve been thinking about this pullover ever since. Now that cooler temperatures are back, it felt like the right time to pick it up, and I’m so glad that I did! It’s such a versatile crewneck – it’s casual but polished at the same time. I love the kind of ribbed texture of the top – it makes it look nicer than a sweatshirt, but it’s still just as comfortable. It’s the perfect weight to throw on as an easy layer – it’s not too heavy at all. It has some stretch to it, but is structured enough that it doesn’t look slouchy.

And the zippers! Are the a great detail to elevate the crewneck? Yes. Are they also a great adaptive feature of the crewneck? Yes! I find it really hard to wear any sort of pullover that’s not really boxy, typically. My torso is extremely short (it hasn’t grown since I had spinal fusion surgery in sixth grade), so the extra length on most tops just ends up bunched around my waist if it doesn’t slightly flare out. It’s tricky to find tops that don’t add a ton of bulk, or don’t just pile up awkwardly around my stomach.
But with a zipper on each side of this crewneck, I can just unzip completely and and the top flows out perfectly around me and my chair. It made the top so much more comfortable to wear, too – so easy to get it adjusted and sitting comfortably around me and my wheelchair. And I love that they’re just a cute detail that happens to work well for me!
