2024 Goals

I don’t like to choose resolutions for the year, because often it feels like you’re setting yourself up for failure. But I do like to set goals! To me, they’re a little bit different – goals are just things I’d like to focus on over the next year. I keep them reasonable and attainable, too. I’m absolutely not trying to set myself up to fail, but rather trying to help myself grow over the next year (very fitting given my word of the year this year!). So here are the goals I have for 2024.

Keep Reading Consistently

I love to read, but I also want to make sure reading stays a fun hobby for me, rather than a chore. I like for it to be something I want to do, not something that I have to do. So I don’t set reading goals in terms of number of books or pages that I want to read over the next year. Rather, I simply say that I want to keep reading consistently. For me, this means making sure to read at least a few pages every day or every other day. It keeps me in the habit of reading, but also keeps me from getting too obsessed about hitting a specific goal, or from getting into a reading rut.

Do More Small Acts of Self-Care

I used to do weekly at-home manicures and monthly face masks… and that kind of fell to the wayside since 2020. At first it felt like too much effort if I was just staying at home, and then I got out of the habit and it just felt like too much effort, period. But I miss looking down and seeing my nails in a pretty color, and I miss taking the time for a face mask or two. So I want to get back into these habits again! Not necessarily every week, but more often – just bringing that part of myself back again, just because I miss it.

(Actually) Work on My Book

I had this as a 2023 goal, but that… did not happen. It’s okay! 2023 did not turn out how I expected it in a lot of ways, and I had to shift some goals and priorities. So I’m going to try again this year. I have an outline finished, so I just need to be intentional about finding small amounts of time consistently to work on writing.

Try New Experiences

This goes along with choosing growth as my word for 2024 – I want to try more new experiences. Whether it’s checking out a new restaurant or coffee shop, or checking out a new book club or local meetup, I just want to be open to new, different things. I know that I’m a creature of habit and can get extremely comfortable doing the same thing over and over (and over and over and over…), and I want to try to push myself past this a little.

Be Intentional About Connecting

Every year after I send out holiday cards, I remember how much I love sending and receiving mail… and every year after January, I’m haphazard at best about continuing to send out “just for fun” cards and notes to friends and family. So I want to be more intentional about connecting in 2024. Whether it’s sending out snail mail, or setting up a FaceTime, or making time to see my friends – I want to make it a priority rather than an afterthought.
