I always love when something I’m already into becomes a trend. That’s how I’m feeling right now with cherry fragrances – more of them keep popping up, and I’m here for it. There’s something so nice about the fruity and gourmand mix of cherry, and how many different approaches to a cherry scent there are. Right now, I have three on rotation – Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry, Phlur’s Cherry Stem, and YSL’s Black Opium Over Red.
Tom Ford Lost Cherry
For me, Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry is the iconic cherry fragrance. It reminds me of a maraschino cherry, kind of… sweet, but boozy, too. It has bitter almond and tonka notes, too, which come together to make a sweet-but-not-too-sweet, somewhat gourmand black cherry scent. There’s something addicting about it – I love when I catch a whiff of it on myself. I love that it doesn’t dry down into something too sickly sweet, which can happen with fruitier scents. This is (by far) the priciest option, so I actually just have the travel size – it’s not an everyday perfume for me, so it works out well!
Phlur Cherry Stem
Phlur’s Cherry Stem is the newest addition to my cherry collection, and it’s a good one. It’s more cherry forward – you can smell the fruitiness of the cherry right off the bat. But is has deeper undertones, too – plum nectar and ebony woods – that made this a sexier take on cherry. The sweetness is there, but it’s not over the top, and dries down to something much more subtle. This is a great fall fragrance, with the perfect mix of notes for something for the transition time of year.
Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Over Red
If you’re looking to dip your toe into cherry, Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Opium Over Red is the fragrance for you. It’s a take on YSL’s Black Opium fragrance, but with the addition of coffee and cherry notes. It’s a more subtle cherry, I think – it’s there, but more in the background (as is the coffee). It has a nice vanilla-forward dry down, with a hint of cherry to keep you guessing. It has really nice staying power, and is gourmand but also warm and cozy. Since the cherry is more mixed, I find this a great option for any occasion – it’s really versatile! Though it does lean more fall/winter than summer.
