2021 Goals

Since 2020 did not turn out at all like anyone expected, I’m being realistic in setting my 2021 goals. I’m never really one for resolutions, anyway, because I typically lose my motivation with them a few days or weeks into the new year. But I like the idea of setting more internal, inward-looking goals. This past year has definitely underscored, for me, the importance of being comfortable and happy with my own company. So this year I’m focusing on building habits or making positive changes in my own life, and not focusing on external things.

Keep Reading Consistently
Keeping in line with not liking to set resolutions, I don’t like to set a strict number of books or minutes per day reading, because I feel like I’m setting myself up to fail. But reading is one of my favorite hobbies, and I love getting all caught up in a great book. I think I learn a lot from reading, too, regardless of what genre I’m reading. So just like I did in 2020, I want to keep reading consistently throughout the weeks/months/year.

Do More Mindfulness Meditations
Using Headspace before bed is a solid habit for me now. I’ve been doing it for months now, and I actually look forward to hitting “play” on the wind down meditation as I’m trying to fall asleep. Typically, I’m asleep before the 15 minute session is up, but when it’s not quite enough, I turn on one of their 45-minute sleepcasts to fall asleep to. I can’t stress enough how much I love it.

What I haven’t really done, though, is build a mindfulness practice while I’m awake, and that’s what I want to work on. I tend to get stuck on finding the “perfect” time during the day to meditate, and since I can’t ever find it/decide what that is, I end up just not doing it. So this year, I want to make it a point to build that practice, no matter what time of day I do it. Meditation is so powerful in teaching you not to think too far ahead, and to really focus on the moment, which has been hugely helpful for me in getting through 2020. I want to keep building that skill.

Buy less “fast fashion”
Sustainability can be difficult as a disabled woman, because a lot of the sustainability swaps are not easy for me to actually implement. But fashion is one place where I can, and should, be more sustainable. I can definitely fall into the habit of buying new things out of boredom, or to have something to write about here. I’m not going to stop shopping completely, of course, but just going to be more mindful about what I’m buying and what I need.

Write More
This blog has filled a HUGE creative itch for me, but it’s also made me remember how much I love to write. In 2021, I want to explore more ways that I can write (while also continuing to blog here, of course!). I’ve had dreams of writing a book since I was a kid – I think that the first thing I ever said that I wanted to be was an author – so maybe 2021 is the year that I get started on that!

Are you setting goals for this year? Let me know!
