Accidentally Adaptive: Streaming Movies

This year, I decided - somewhat on a whim - that I wanted to watch all of the best picture nominees for this year's Oscars. I had seen a few of them already, but spent this past weekend having a cozy movie marathon where I streamed more of them, one after the other. And it hit me that this was only possible because all of the movies were available to watch on streaming, which is so much more accessible for me than going to the movie theater. So I thought I'd talk about how movies being available on streaming is actually Accidentally Adaptive!

Rare Disease Day and SMA

Every year on the last day of February, we celebrate Rare Disease Day - a day dedicated to raising awareness, engagement, and support for those living with or caring for someone with a rare disease. My disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), is one of those rare diseases! I put up an Instagram question box yesterday, and am answering a few of the questions that came up. I'll also be answering more on Instagram, so make sure you're following along there too!

Disabled While in the Hospital

This might surprise you, but I typically try to avoid the hospital - both the ER and being admitted - as much as humanly possible. If it's something that can be handled at home, or as an outpatient, even if it's a little bit more work, I'll take that option. That's because while hospitals might seem like they're something that should be accessible by default, that's actually far from the case. Hospitals are extremely hard to navigate as a disabled person! Since my recent hospital stay is still fresh on my mind, I thought I'd explain a little bit more.

Disabled While Having Plans

I mentioned earlier this week that my October has been pretty busy - at least, for me! I've had both weeknight and weekend plans - book signings, shows - in addition to work, plus the work I do for the blog. I love having plans and things to do - I don't regret going to any of the things I did over the last month. But for me, saying yes to a fun event is more than just making sure my schedule is clear. There are so many other considerations that I have to keep in mind, and I thought I'd try to explain a little bit.

I had the chance this week to do something really cool - I was part of a panel for an Intro to Disability Studies class at a local college, where I, along with the other panelists, got to talk about accessibility, disability, ableism, intersectionality, and my personal experiences with all of the above. It was a really great class, and the students were so open and interested and receptive. It also made me a little bit introspective, too, and made me think back on my own college experience, and what's changed for me since then.

Adaptive Options at Target

Target has really been impressing me lately with their adaptive clothing options. I love that it's something they've been consistently doing for a few years now, and are adding to it each season, just like they would with any clothes offer. Honestly, it's something I never thought I'd see a big name store like Target doing, so it's been fun to be able to easily buy adaptive products that work for me.

Accidentally Adaptive: Addison Bay Side-Zip Crewneck

Fall is here, and so is my desire to stay warm and cozy all the time in comfy layers. But a lot of times, adding layers is better for me in theory than it is in reality. Anything too tight or too bulky is really hard for me to move around in, and it often ends up getting really bunched up around my waist, because things fit differently when you're seated. But this Addison Bay Crewneck, with zippers on both sides, is an accidentally adaptive solution to my problems!

SMA Pride Month: What I Wish People Knew

For my last post of the series this year, I thought I'd share some things that I wish people knew and understood about my life. I want to share some of the big and small things - the things that you might not realize, or things that I've maybe mentioned before but are worth repeating.

Accidentally Adaptive: Crocs Sandals

I know that the end of August is not necessarily the ideal time to be posting a pair of sandals, but I just bought these recently and was so excited that I wanted to share. I saw these Brooklyn Buckle Crocs sandals online and placed an order almost immediately. They're incredibly comfortable, surprisingly cute, and adjustable and adaptive, too.

SMA Pride Month: Biggest Lessons Learned

A lot of times, my life with SMA feels pretty normal to me - I've got my routine down, and I don't feel like I'm living all that differently than everyone else. But there have been times, over the years, where I've tried a little hard to pretend to be normal... and regretted it afterwards. Times when I didn't really fully embrace and accept the impact SMA has on me. So I thought I'd explain a little bit about those times today.
